The Fight for Safe Water: $400M Recovered in MTBE Cases

MTBE contaminated groundwater across multiple states. Learn how Dema Law partnered with state governments to recover over $400 million for cleanup and restoration.

Methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) is a chemical that has become one of the most persistent and widespread contaminants in groundwater. It moves quickly through soil and water, is difficult to remove, and can make drinking water undrinkable due to its strong odor and taste. It has also been associated with potential health concerns, including cancer.

Dema Law represents the states of Maryland, New Jersey, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in lawsuits seeking accountability for MTBE contamination. These efforts have secured more than $400 million in settlements from oil companies—funds used to investigate, clean up, and restore polluted water systems.

We work closely with attorneys general and environmental agencies to build strong, science-driven cases. Our mission is to protect public access to clean, safe water—and to ensure that polluters are held responsible for the damage they’ve caused.
