Holding Industry to Account for Decades of PFAS Pollution

Industrial plant spewing pollution.

PFAS chemicals contaminate water, air, and soil. Find out how Dema Law is helping state, territorial, and municipal agencies hold polluters accountable.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as "forever chemicals," have been used for decades in products like non-stick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics, water-repellent clothing, food packaging, and firefighting foams. These man-made chemicals, including PFOA, PFOS, and PFNA, are highly persistent in the environment and the human body. They have been linked to serious health issues, including certain cancers, immune system effects, and reproductive problems.

Dema Law actively advises state and territorial governments in addressing widespread PFAS contamination of air, land, and water. In 2018, the firm, alongside co-counsel, was selected to represent the State of New Jersey’s Attorney General in pursuing claims related to PFAS contamination across the state. PFAS compounds have been detected in drinking water, groundwater, surface water, sediment, soil, air, animals, plants, and other natural resources throughout New Jersey.

The firm is pursuing legal action against companies such as DuPont, Chemours, 3M, and others associated with extensive PFAS contamination at three major manufacturing facilities in New Jersey. These lawsuits seek to make the defendants pay for the full cost of investigating, cleaning up, and containing the PFAS contamination—both at the original sites and in the surrounding areas.

Additionally, Dema Law and its co-counsel have been retained to prosecute claims against numerous companies that manufactured and sold aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) in New Jersey, despite knowing these products released harmful PFAS chemicals into the environment.
